- The refitter buys the chassis from the usual truck manufacturers. School
- buses generally work the same way. The specialized equipment gets added,
- and you have your ambulance (school bus, tow truck . . .). The chassis and
- drive train are usually covered by the chassis manufacturer warranty, and
- the add on by the refitter. This sometimes causes "jurisdictional" issues.
- :-) I'm not in that business any more. :-) :-)
-
- More to the point for the original question, Ed Hare at ARRL compiled a
- very good listing of auto manufacturer's (that is the possessive form, to
- borrow from another thread) policies for radio installation. Toyota was
- taught the error of their ways, but still left a bad taste in the mouths
- (plural) of several hams. It pays to understand the manufacturer's policy
- before approaching the dealer. They usually know little about radio beyond
- CB, and avoid implied warranty like the plague.

- not knowing much about the format of the new T-2 exams, i can't say for

- Solid state practically didn't exist when that exam was written! (my exam

- Telephone GEC Plessey semiconductors on (408) 438 2900 and ask them about
- availability of the GP1010 and GP1020 ICs and GP1010 evaluation board. The
- GP1010 is a receiver on a chip (just add clock and sprinkle lightly with
- passives) the GP1020 is a correlator that decodes the spread spectrum
- signal. You will need to design and build your own interface to your
- development PC of whatever though.
-
- As for information about signal structure etcetera, go to your library and
- look for anything by J.J.Spilker, issues of GPS world and (unlikely in the
- US) copies or Electronics World (UK publication) for about 18 months ago.
- If you can get the annual report from the Institute of Navigation (ION) so
- much the better. An excellent introduction to GPSs. As for GPS resources,
- well, there is a GPS UseNet group (can't recall off hand exactly what), but
- that is mainly uses of GPS and reviews/opinions of particular devices.

-
- In re reading my own post I just realized I didn't make it clear I am
- talking about someone who upgrades to tech plus now. For the last
- few years untill the FCC upgraded their computers NO Tech Plus licenses
- were issued. The VECs kept a listing of the Tech pluses issued which
- was shared with the FCC. The official line was that the Certificate of
- Completion was to be saved forever, or untill a general was earned.
-
- Now that the FCC is issuing Tech Plus licenses it is not clear what
- they will do with all those Techs that should have licenses that say
- Tech Plus but don't. Several people have written asking if they should
- send in a 610 to get their license "modified". My own feeling is not to make
- the paperwork crunch at the FCC worse and just to wait till renewal is
- necessary, least we make the delay for new commers worse. Keep your C of C.
-
- It is not clear the FCC knows how to or has even thought about handling
- all the older tech license that shoud be listed as Tech plus.
- I was just talking to someone from CA who was has tech first issued
- 24 years ago, he cretainly has code credit along with el 3b credit,
- but the renewal came through last month, as a plain tech.
- Hopefully the FCC realizes this is a problem and can do something about it.
- Mabey they have to buy yet another computer or at least a couple of years
- of programing :-) I wonder how many hours ($) some consultant will spend
- fixing this bug (feature)?
