  111. The refitter buys the chassis from the usual truck manufacturers. School 
  112. buses generally work the same way. The specialized equipment gets added, 
  113. and you have your ambulance (school bus, tow truck . . .). The chassis and 
  114. drive train are usually covered by the chassis manufacturer warranty, and 
  115. the add on by the refitter. This sometimes causes "jurisdictional" issues. 
  116. :-)   I'm not in that business any more. :-)  :-)

  118. More to the point for the original question, Ed Hare at ARRL compiled a 
  119. very good listing of auto manufacturer's (that is the possessive form, to 
  120. borrow from another thread) policies for radio installation. Toyota was 
  121. taught the error of their ways, but still left a bad taste in the mouths 
  122. (plural) of several hams. It pays to understand the manufacturer's policy 
  123. before approaching the dealer. They usually know little about radio beyond 
  124. CB, and avoid implied warranty like the plague.

  144. not knowing much about the format of the new T-2 exams, i can't say for
  145. sure, but i find it impossible to believe that the new ones would bear any
  146. resemblence (living or dead) to the old T-2 exam.
  147. Solid state practically didn't exist when that exam was written!  (my exam
  148. was dated May 1952, and I took it in 1992).  Seriously, my exam covered
  149. vacuum technology circuits that were popular in the '30s and '40s.  It was
  150. a lot of fun to sort through all that stuff, but i have to (grudgingly)
  151. admit that the call to modernize these exams had much merit.
  152. HOWEVER, if you're still interested in "how it used to be", I have several
  153. study guides for the old radiotelegraph (and radiotelephone) exams that
  154. are fun reading (both technically and historically).  Contact me directly
  155. if you decide you want one.  Otherwise, good luck on the exam!

  274.  that is mainly uses of GPS and reviews/opinions of particular devices.

  425.      Well, TCP is something I would love to get into, and I've read all
  426. the fact sheets and "beginners" explanations..but its now left me with
  427. some unanswered questions. First, Is the idea behind TCP that a local
  428. server picks up on your radio messages and just keeps relaying them? Do
  429. most areas have these servers to connect to any other place than the apx.
  430. 100 mile direct radio VHF radius?
  431. The idea is to to communicate over long distances using a vhf rig,
  432. correct?
  433. Lastly, can TCP addresses be written to from the landline internet? Thanks

  477. All TNC's fit your bill pretty well.  They all run off a serial port, and
  478. contain a microcomputer to handle most of the overhead.  MFJ, Kantronics,
  479. Tiny TNC - all will do what you want.

  496. In July 94, QST, p 80, there is an article on how to modify a Kenwood TS-450S/AT
  497. so that the tuner is always in the circuit...

  499. How difficult would it be to do the same modification on a Yeasu FT890/AT?
  500. If you have the manual, can you comment on how the modification should be
  501. done.

  547. In re reading my own post I just realized I didn't make it clear I am
  548. talking about someone who upgrades to tech plus now.   For the last 
  549. few years untill the FCC upgraded their computers   NO  Tech Plus licenses 
  550. were issued.  The VECs kept a listing of the Tech pluses issued which
  551. was shared with the FCC.  The official line was that the Certificate of 
  552. Completion was to be saved forever, or untill a general was earned.

  554. Now that the FCC is issuing Tech Plus licenses it is not clear what 
  555. they will do with all those Techs that should have licenses that say 
  556. Tech Plus but don't.  Several people have written asking if they should
  557. send in a 610 to get their license "modified".  My own feeling is not to make 
  558. the paperwork crunch at the FCC worse and just to wait till renewal is 
  559. necessary,  least we make the delay for new commers worse.  Keep your C of C.
  560.  
  561. It is not clear the FCC knows how to or has even thought about handling 
  562. all the older tech license that shoud be listed as Tech plus.  
  563. I was just talking to someone from CA who was has tech first issued 
  564. 24 years ago, he cretainly has code credit along with el 3b credit, 
  565. but the renewal came through last month, as a plain tech.   
  566. Hopefully the FCC realizes this is a problem and can do something about it.  
  567. Mabey they have to buy yet another computer or at least a couple of years 
  568. of programing :-)  I wonder how many hours ($) some consultant will spend 
  569. fixing this bug (feature)?
